Step 1 — Get the Dataset You’ll Use in Tableau We will use Tableau’s Sample – Superstore dataset. Follow the steps below carefully. Use the Built-In Superstore Dataset 1. Open your web browser (Chrome, Edge, etc.). 2. Go to this link: https://community.tableau.com/s/sampledataLinks to an external site. 3. Scroll until you find Sampledata > Business> Superstore Sales. 4. Click the link to download the file. It will usually download as: o Sample - Superstore.xls or o Sample - Superstore.xlsx 5. Save the file in your ONE DRIVE folder you previously created in class "ACCT 315": o Create a new one within it called “ACCT 315 Tableau Assignment”. Important Note: Make sure you know exactly where the file is saved. You will need to browse to that location in Tableau in the next step. Step 2 — Open Tableau and Connect to the Dataset Follow these steps slowly and check them off as you go. A. Open Tableau Desktop 1. On your computer, click the Start Menu (Windows) or Launchpad/Applications (Mac). 2. Search for Tableau Desktop. 3. Click to open Tableau Desktop. 4. Wait for the Tableau start screen to load (this may take a minute the first time). B. Connect to the Excel File (if you used Option B) If you downloaded the Excel Superstore file: 1. On the left side of the Tableau start screen, find the section called “Connect”. 2. Under “To a File”, click Microsoft Excel. 3. A file browser window will open. 4. Navigate to the folder where you saved the file in Step 2: o Example: Documents > ACCT 315 Tableau Assignment o Or: Downloads 5. Click on the file Sample - Superstore.xlsx to select it. 6. Click Open. You should now see a new screen called the Data Source page.
