Create Three Basic Visualizations (Detailed Instructions)
Visualization 1: Bar Chart — Sales by Product Category
Purpose:
See which product categories generate the most sales.
Steps:
1. Make sure you are on Sheet 1 (bottom tab).
o If not, click Sheet 1.
2. In the Data Pane on the left, locate Category under Dimensions.
3. Click and drag Category to the Rows shelf at the top.
o You should now see Category listed vertically (Furniture, Office Supplies, Technology).
4. Find Sales under Measures in the Data Pane.
5. Click and drag Sales to the Columns shelf.
o Tableau will automatically create a horizontal bar chart.
6. Format the bar chart:
o Hover over the bars to ensure values appear.
o If needed, click Show Mark Labels in the toolbar (icon: “A|B”).
7. Add a title:
o Double-click the default title at the top.
o Type: Sales by Product Category
o Click OK.
8. Rename the worksheet:
o Right-click Sheet 1 tab → Rename → Type: Category Sales
Visualization 2: Filled Map — Sales by State
Purpose:
Visually compare sales across the U.S.
Steps:
1. At the bottom, click New Worksheet (small chart icon).
o Or press Ctrl + M / Command + M.
o Tableau will open Sheet 2.
2. In the Data Pane, find State under Dimensions.
3. Click and drag State into the middle of the canvas where it says “Drop field here”.
o Tableau will automatically generate a map (if not, see note below).
4. Find Sales under Measures.
5. Click and drag Sales onto Color in the Marks card.
o States will change color based on sales values.
o Darker = higher sales.
6. Adjust the map if needed:
o On the Marks card, ensure the dropdown says Map, not Automatic or Circle.
o Click Color → adjust color palette if desired.
7. Add a title:
o Double-click the chart title.
o Type: Sales by State
o Click OK.
8. Rename the worksheet:
o Right-click Sheet 2 → Rename → Type: State Sales Map
