Imagine you have been asked to present a workshop on literacy in the 21st century. You have been asked to focus on key features of reading instruction that make up a balanced and effective literacy program at the early childhood level. Your audience will likely include current teachers, new teachers, librarians, paraprofessionals, and possibly high school students who plan to pursue early childhood education after graduation.  Create a 10- to 12-slide presentation using Microsoft® PowerPoint® or another medium, such as Prezi®, Powtoon®, Wideo®, etc. Refer to the College of Education’s Technology Resources Library for additional information on presentation media you may use. Research and include the following in your presentation: A description and explanation of the importance of the 5 reading components (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension) in an effective literacy program A chart in which you compare the process of first-language acquisition to that of second-language acquisition  Include descriptions of 2–3 strategies to support English learners at each of the 6 stages of language acquisition (total of 12–18 strategies) An explanation of the distinct features of the structured literacy approach to teaching reading Include descriptions of 2–3 published programs that support teachers in implementing structured literacy in their classroom (e.g., Wilson Fundations®, LETRS®, Barton Reading and Spelling System®, Wilson Reading System®, etc.). Examples of specific ways to incorporate authentic texts into an effective literacy program  Include detailed speaker notes, a title, and a references page or slide.  Cite your sources according to APA guidelines.
