This week, you are learning about how substance use disorders develop, how they are diagnosed, and various approaches to treatment. You are also examining the challenges individuals face when living with these conditions, including disruptions to biological, psychological, and social functioning.  In this assessment, you will demonstrate your understanding of the symptomology and real-life impact of a substance-related disorder.  Assessment Preparation Review the following scenario: You are a program manager at a substance use disorder treatment agency tasked with training staff to facilitate a new program for treating substance-related disorders. To ensure the program is both effective and empathetic, you will prepare agency staff to recognize how these disorders manifest in real life (symptomology) and how they impact individuals’ daily functioning—especially when co-occurring with depressive symptoms. You have decided to create a presentation to be used in training to illustrate the symptomology and real-world challenges of substance-related disorders.   Select a substance-related disorder to research (e.g., alcohol use disorder, opioid use disorder, cannabis use disorder).  Review the DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria for the disorder you selected.  Research the disorder’s impact on the following: Biological functioning (e.g., brain chemistry, physical health) Psychological functioning (e.g., mood, cognition, behavior) Social functioning (e.g., relationships, work, community involvement)  Explore the relationship between depressive disorders and your selected substance-related disorder, including how they may co-occur and influence one another.  Assessment Deliverable  Create a 10-slide presentation, with speaker notes or audio narration, in which you explain the symptomology of a substance use disorder and illustrate the real-life impact of the disorder through two distinct scenarios. Introduction to the Disorder Briefly summarize the selected substance-related disorder, including relevant statistics or trends (e.g., prevalence by age group or region). Etiology Describe the origins and contributing factors of the disorder. Consider the following: Biological perspective (e.g., genetics, neurochemistry) Psychological perspective (e.g., trauma, personality traits) Social perspective (e.g., environment, peer influence) DSM-5-TR Diagnostic Summary Summarize key diagnostic features and criteria for the disorder, based on the DSM-5-TR. Challenges to Daily Life Describe the impact of the disorder on work, relationships, physical health, and daily functioning. Real-Life Scenarios Create 2 fictional scenarios that demonstrate the real-life impact of the selected substance-related disorder. Use the following guidelines: Include a brief summary of each scenario on your slides. Provide the full scenario in the speaker notes or in your audio narration.  Scenario 1 should depict an individual’s experience with the selected disorder. Scenario 2 should depict an individual’s experience with the same disorder with co-occurring depressive symptoms (e.g. major depressive disorder). For each scenario, do the following: Identify which DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria are met. Explain how the symptoms interfere with daily functioning (e.g., work, relationship, health). Explain how the scenario can help staff better understand and empathize with clients affected by the disorder.
