Psych650 Wk 1 Discussion Exploring Mental Health And Social Stigma
PSYCH 650 · UOP
📋 Assignment Instructions
Societal norms play a complex role in how communities define and respond to mental health. For example, what one group calls a mental health concern may not always align with standardized diagnostic tools like DSM, which uses specific symptoms to categorize mental health disorders. These differences can influence how mental health is understood and addressed. Additionally, social stigma can lead to unfair judgment towards individuals with mental disorders and can have a significant impact on their well-being. Although public awareness and acceptance of mental health concerns have improved, social perceptions can still lead to misunderstanding or marginalization.
In this discussion, you will consider the impact of social stigma on mental health.
Before completing this discussion, review the following chapters of Fundamentals of Psychopathology, as needed, to recall important details about mental health and social stigma:
• Ch. 1, “Psychopathology: Past and Present”
• Ch. 2, “Models of Psychopathology”
• Ch. 3, “Clinical Assessment, Diagnosis, and Treatment”
Respond to the following:
• How have you seen mental health stigmas play out in your professional or social communities? What have your reactions been in these situations?
• In what ways can communities consider social stigmas as they support individuals with mental health diagnoses?
• What recommendations would you provide to reduce social stigmas around mental health and mental disorders?
