Psych644 Wk 6 Discussion Decisions
📋 Assignment Instructions
When we make decisions throughout our day, no matter if it’s in our personal lives or at work, we are working through a problem. We make decisions about what to eat, what to wear, or what work tasks need to be prioritized. These decisions often depend on the context in which they are made. In the textbook, researchers differentiate between two types of people—experts and novices. (See section 12.5, “How Experts Solve Problems,” on page 397.) Let's consider the characteristics of experts and novices to understand how decisions shape our day.
Respond to the following in your discussion:
• Think about the decisions you make throughout the day. These decisions can range from routine, low-stakes choices (i.e., what to eat for lunch), to strategic or value-based ones (i.e., prioritizing tasks or pursuing long-term objectives). What are 3–5 decisions you make throughout the day?
• For each decision, ask yourself: In this case, could I be considered an expert, where I have a lot of experience and knowledge to guide me? Or could I be more of a novice, where I might be learning or trying something new? What type of problem-solver am I for each of these decisions? Why?
• What factors (i.e., context and environment, knowledge and experience, etc.) might influence the decisions you make throughout your day?
