📋 Assignment Instructions

The human attentional system has evolved primarily as a survival mechanism that excels at detecting potential threats in our environment, while often sacrificing sustained focus and attention on specific details. Paying attention to details can make the difference between avoiding a catastrophe and ensuring our safety. For example, noticing a small crack in a bridge while driving could prevent a potential collapse, or spotting a warning sign in a workplace can help avoid an accident. In these situations, our ability to focus on specific details is crucial for preventing harm and protecting ourselves and others. Review some examples of how we colloquially use "attention": • Paying attention to something – An example of this could be someone "paying attention" to a presentation, which implies that they are actively focusing on the content being presented. • Dividing your attention – If someone is "dividing attention," they are trying to do more than one thing at once. • Not giving full attention – An example of this could be a person working on the computer while talking to someone, and the person on the computer is "not giving full attention" to the conversation. Their focus is split between the person they are talking to and the task they are working on. Choose 1 of the scenarios: • Taking notes while listening to a presentation • Walking or riding a bike while listening to a podcast • Studying while watching TV • Doing work on the computer while talking to someone Respond to the following questions: • How challenging or manageable might it be to engage in both tasks simultaneously? • What specific aspects or details could be compromised when attempting to divide your attention between the two activities? • Draw on learning theories such as Broadbent's filter model of attention, the attenuation model of attention, processing capacity, or cognitive load to elaborate on your explanation.
