In this assessment, you’ll write a white paper to explore the biological and biochemical aspects of the brain and their connection to addiction. Assessment Preparation Scenario: You work for an organization that is acquiring an addictive disorders treatment facility and you’ve been asked to write a white paper to give to the leaders of your organization to help them better understand the intricacies of addiction, including its biological and biochemical aspects. Select an addictive disorder to use as the focus for your white paper. You may want to review Ch. 9, “Reward, Addiction, and Psychopharmacology,” of your textbook for options. Review Table 9.2, “Risk Factors for Addiction,” on p. 237 in Ch. 9, “Reward, Addiction, and Psychopharmacology,” of your textbook for a summary of the risk factors for developing an addiction. Research the following topics using the University Library and Google Scholar: • Biological and biochemical aspects of an individual's behavior • The impact of biochemical systems on human behavior • The impact of changes of the biochemical system on human interactions Assessment Deliverable  Write a 1,050- to 1,400-word white paper in which you analyze the biological and biochemical aspects of an addictive disorder. Address the following in your paper: • Describe the selected addictive disorder and its symptoms. • Explain which of the risk factors for addiction identified in Table 9.2 may be aligned with the addictive disorder. Why? • Analyze the specific biological and biochemical factors associated with the addictive disorder. • Explain the impact to the various neurotransmitters, nervous system components, brain functions, etc. implicated with the addictive disorder. • Explain the potential risk for co-occurring disorders for an individual with the addictive disorder and identify the neurotransmitters that would be involved. • Summarize recent research on how treatments such as medication, therapy, or behavioral interventions are used to aid in recovery from this addictive disorder.
