Students who protested against the war at Kent State University were targeted and shot by the National Guard. Nixon promised that he was “not a crook,” but then White House tapes revealed his involvement in the cover-up and forced his resignation. These, along with other incidents, shook the confidence in their government of many Americans. Against this backdrop: • Do you think American distrust in national leaders was a given? Why or why not? • Compare and contrast the idealism of the early 1960s with the growing cynicism of the 1970s. Include at least one of the following in your response: Watergate, Nixon’s pardon, the Camp David Accords, or the Iranian hostage crisis. • Has any presidential administration since Nixon been able to restore trust in the government?
