It’s important to know how to create an effective resume and establish a personal brand when applying for jobs. Building your own brand and online presence is important for showcasing your strengths and priorities to potential employers or networkers. Consider networking on platforms before you even graduate; you may be surprised by the opportunities networking could provide to you as you pursue your health care career. For example, LinkedIn® is a business networking site that allows participants to connect with other professionals and search for available jobs and internships. In this week’s activities, you’ll be using your LinkedIn profile. If you don’t currently have a LinkedIn profile, follow the steps below to create a profile: 1. Access LinkedIn. 2. Click on Join now. 3. Create an account using your email address and a password. 4. Follow the prompts to create your profile. 5. Add information from your resume and other pertinent experience to complete the fields and showcase your skills. Read the following resources: • Personal Branding Guide: Five Steps to Build Your Personal Brand • LinkedIn Guide: Five Steps to Writing a Strong LinkedIn Profile Access LinkedIn and look at your own and others’ LinkedIn profiles. Consider elements from others’ profiles that you could incorporate into your own LinkedIn profile or other social media accounts. (Note: Viewing others’ LinkedIn profiles while logged into your personal LinkedIn account will notify them that you’ve viewed their profile.) • What are personal brand tips and examples that you found during your research? Share them with your classmates. • What strategies will you use to build your personal brand? • If you feel comfortable, post a link to your own LinkedIn profile for feedback from your classmates. • What updates do you plan to make to your LinkedIn profile after this exercise?
