Assignment Information The purpose of these assignments is to get you actively engaged in the content, with hands-on experience working with data and data visualizations. These assignments will include utilizing R and R Studio to visualize data and run stats. It will also help prepare you for the lab experiences, so please consider reviewing and attempting this assignment prior to live class/lab. You are encouraged to work together on these assignments but you are required to submit work that represents your unique, individual work and contributions. Any work that is exactly the same as a peers is unacceptable and will result in a zero. The value in working with others is to hear alternative explanations or understanding. Moving through difficulties together. We are a team, work together but be sure you are turning in work that represents your own work and work product. When analyzing scientific data, as has been discussed, you will need to be familiar with the necessary tools to help you. There are a variety of tools that can simply spit out an output, but the key is understanding what you are doing, why you are doing it, and what it means. Remember, research is about asking informed questions and answering them in sound and meaningful ways. Application and Integration 6 Instructions The purpose of this activity is to give you hands on experience using an available tool to calculate effect sizes. The tools you are going to be using were developed by The Pusto Lab at the University of Oregon. You can find the Shiny applet here (link to: https://jepusto.shinyapps.io/SCD-effect-sizes/) Open the link and read about how to run the applet. • You can run it via the website hosted by ShinyApps OR • You can run it on your own computer. This information is in the “Accessing the calculator’ tab on the left-hand side. Next, you will calculate the effect size from the example data provided in this applet. • Choose and locate one of the articles that the sample data was collected from, found under Example Data. • Select from the top ribbon Multiple-Series Calculator • Select your chosen article from the author list of sample date. Walk through the steps necessary to calculate the effect size(s) for a given set of the data. See the YouTube video below for assistance. • Download (copy or screentshot is fine) the figure and effect size data. This data should mirror what was done in the article that you chose. • Submit a document that includes a screenshot of the figure and effect size data from the article, and the data that you calculated from the applet. Show which results are similar (they should be the same) and write a brief write-up of what these results mean (be sure that this is in your own words). This write-up should include consideration for: o A summary of what an effect size is, why they are valuable and what they represent. o How you might have reported and interpreted these results without effect size (in APA format!) o How you would report and interpret them with effect size (in APA format!) o How adding the effect size result contributes to your analysis and interpretation of the data.
