This case study assignment measures your mastery of ULOs 1.4 and 2.2.  Identify a serial killer that you can find reputable information for (i.e., choosing Jack the Ripper is not suitable as we are unable to examine physical characteristics). Be sure to provide a synopsis of who they are and the crimes they committed.  Using Lombroso’s Theory of Atavism and Sheldon’s Model of Somatotyping, identify aspects of your chosen serial killer. Identify the physical, mental, or psychological features that align with these theories and models and note which ones do not.  After providing a thorough breakdown of your chosen serial killer, discuss a policy implication that could be derived from either Lombroso’s Theory of Atavism or Sheldon’s Model of Somatotyping. In explaining this policy implication, be sure to identify the strengths and weaknesses of such policy based on these measures.  Lastly, discuss how anthropological criminology can assist in a global focus of crime, as it relates to international crime, homeland security, and domestic threats. Can this approach be used to examine international crime and terrorism in the same way we can examine domestic crime? Be sure to reference the article by Sausdal and Vigh (2019) for assistance.
